Background

Due to the Egyptian influence on the process of its independence, the African country of Sudan has since it’s beginning been ruled by an ethnically Arab elite. However, the majority of the population of Sudan are indigenous African blacks, both Christian and Muslims, who have been historically discriminated against by the central government in Khartoum in all social and economical arenas and left out of the administration of the country. In 2003 in the Western region of Darfur, black militants seeking better economic opportunities, social justice, and political involvement attacked members of the Sudanese army, the enforcer of the interests of the Sudanese government. As a response the Sudanese army and an armed militia known as the Janjaweed began a wanton destruction of villages by aerial bombardment, setting villages on fire, raping women and murdering civilians men, women, and children. In 2009 the end is not yet in sight.
